Council Workshop – Peer Support Leadership ( Part 1 )

•January 24, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The recent saturday, I went for an enriching workshop, about peer support leadership. It was meant for the CMCs to manage class, and councillors for the OPSL. Being a councillor, I went for the workshop.

Let me give u a brief background about OPSL. Last year, we had OPSL too! OPSL stands for Ortus Peer Support Leaders which were supposed to be a program to let the sec 1s ease into the new Hwa Chong environment and settle in as soon as possible. We were supposed to talk to them , encourage them , answer their doubts.

However, OPSL wasn’t as smooth sailing as it seems it would turned out be. Do you remember last year when the seniors went to our class and requested for something with us after school? Haha, it is the same last year, despite telling them beforehand that we would be visiting them after school. The sec 1s classes turned to havoc , and many reluctantly stay back , with whines here and there , ” My mummy wait at carpark already” , ” I never eat lunch leh ” , ” I got a lot of homework to do sia “. After spending about 10 minutes trying to settle them down, we got the ball rolling on our chit-chat sessions.

During the chit-chat sessions, a lot of the sec 1s were uninterested. Many would give one word answers like , ” How was the SOO ( Sec One Orientation ) ? ” ” Good” . Thus , our main purpose of understanding more about sec 1s were unachieved.

This was basically the main problem we faced. Without any experience on how to try to control the class , we decided to go for a workshop about Peer Support Leadership and facilitation to understand more and learn how to control the class.

I would speak more about the workshop through a few parts so to break the monotony and not let get u (the readers) bored.

CHAPTER 2

One word that describes the theme : Education

Explanation :
On the first day of school , it was rather unpleasant for Scout. Why is this so? In her interactions with Miss Caroline, Scout is victimized by her teacher’s inexperience; Scout means well but receives only punishment in return. The rigid, impersonal protocols demanded by the law and by Miss Caroline’s method of teaching are shown to be insufficient and irrational—Burris Ewell can keep the law happy by coming to school only one day a year, while Scout incurs her teacher’s wrath simply by learning to read at an early age. It is a ridiculous fact that Scout was scolded by her teacher for learning at a young age , and insisted that her parents had teached Scout in a wrong way. Instead , reading is supposed to be encouraged at a young age , such that the children cultivate the good habbit of reading. All these events emphasizes on Education and the need for it to change at that time.

CHAPTER 1

Chapter Naming

Name of the Chapter : Introduction
Two important quotes and events in the chapter :

1) Pg 12 , 3rd paragraph , line 5-7
“The Radley Place was inhabitated by an unknown entity the mere description of who it was enough to make us behave for days on end.”
This suggested to the reader that the Radleys were a mysterious family and gave them background information that why the children were so afraid of the family, especially Boo Radley. The Radleys became one of the children’s fantasies.

2) Pg 17 , 4th paragraph , line 6-7
“The sheriff hadn’t had the heart to put him in jail alongside negroes , so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement.”
This suggested to the reader the issue on racial prejudice in the country, especially in the second part of the book , when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mary Ewell. It shows how the negroes are treated differently from the whites.

Hi My Sweetheart

One of my favourite pastime is to watch taiwan dramas, especially idol dramas. Heres one that I am currently watching.

# Title: 海派甜心 / Hai Pai Tian Xin
# English title: Hi My Sweetheart
# Also known as: Play Boy and Sweetheart / Shanghai Sweetheart
# Genre: Romance, comedy
# Opening theme song: Head Over Heels in Love (愛瘋頭) by Show Lo
# Ending theme song: Rain Love (雨愛) by Rainie Yang

Synopsis: Xue Hai was a certifiable dork when he first arrived in Shanghai. After his schoolmate Bao Zhu saved him from bullying, she became his first love. Then, a misunderstanding caused them to lose contact when she moved back to Taiwan. He thought she dumped him. So he transformed himself from a dork to a hunk in order to seek revenge.

Cast: Show Lo as Xue Hai
Rainie Yang as Bao Zhu

Ratings: 4/5 This show is really amazing and amusing in terms of the actors acting and also the jokes that put into this show. I really like the part when Show Lo act as a dork who did not know anything about the society and was “bullied” by Rainie Yang. The way he speaks and also the way he walk in the drama never fails to make us laugh. The OST (original sound track ) consists of awesome songs. What stands out among the songs is “In Your Eyes” which is a duo between Rainie Yang and Show Lo. It is really lovely and sweet.

Thats All! Maybe You can watch hi my sweetheart too!
