The recent saturday, I went for an enriching workshop, about peer support leadership. It was meant for the CMCs to manage class, and councillors for the OPSL. Being a councillor, I went for the workshop.
Let me give u a brief background about OPSL. Last year, we had OPSL too! OPSL stands for Ortus Peer Support Leaders which were supposed to be a program to let the sec 1s ease into the new Hwa Chong environment and settle in as soon as possible. We were supposed to talk to them , encourage them , answer their doubts.
However, OPSL wasn’t as smooth sailing as it seems it would turned out be. Do you remember last year when the seniors went to our class and requested for something with us after school? Haha, it is the same last year, despite telling them beforehand that we would be visiting them after school. The sec 1s classes turned to havoc , and many reluctantly stay back , with whines here and there , ” My mummy wait at carpark already” , ” I never eat lunch leh ” , ” I got a lot of homework to do sia “. After spending about 10 minutes trying to settle them down, we got the ball rolling on our chit-chat sessions.
During the chit-chat sessions, a lot of the sec 1s were uninterested. Many would give one word answers like , ” How was the SOO ( Sec One Orientation ) ? ” ” Good” . Thus , our main purpose of understanding more about sec 1s were unachieved.
This was basically the main problem we faced. Without any experience on how to try to control the class , we decided to go for a workshop about Peer Support Leadership and facilitation to understand more and learn how to control the class.
I would speak more about the workshop through a few parts so to break the monotony and not let get u (the readers) bored.
